Interview with Amanda Pederson, of The Fern Grove Spa
Jessica: Tell us about your business, what do you do?
Amanda: The Fern Grove Spa is a body-positive, LGBTQ+ welcoming and affirming skincare studio in Tucson, Arizona. We celebrate body diversity by helping people transform their skin health and discover the confidence they were born to have. We achieve this through results-driven facials, judgement-free hair removal for all bodies, and other specialty aesthetics services in a safe, comfortable self-care environment. We also retail a curated variety of professional-grade skincare products as well as small-batch bath and body luxuries made in-house.
Jessica: What do you love most about what you do?
Amanda: I get to meet all different kinds of people with interesting stories and help them feel amazing about themselves. I love that I only interact with people who want to be there, which is a far cry from my previous corporate life. Nobody wakes up like "ugh, I have to go get a facial today". Even if they're having a bad day, I've got a chance to turn the whole thing around, and that's pretty rad.
Jessica: What is a Myth about your industry? Can you debunk it?
Amanda: That it's frivolous and all about vanity. Sure, there's some of that, but your skin is your largest organ and keeping it healthy and happy is important for your immune system, among other things. And for a lot of us, it's about helping people on the inside just as much as it is about anything on the outside. Skin care as a form of self-care can directly affect mental health.
Prioritizing yourself and what makes you feel amazing is not vanity. It can be a tune-up or a lifeline, and everything in between.
Jessica: What is one thing you wish everyone knew, before working with you?
Amanda: Consistency is key, and slow and steady wins the race. If you only have the budget for one facial OR an excellent professional home care regimen, home care wins every time. And, I would rather have you get a 30 minute facial every month than a 90 minute facial every 3 months. Sure, I can use lots of bells and whistles in 90 minutes, but I can do plenty in 30 minutes and the monthly commitment to yourself is priceless.
Jessica: What is something people would be surprised to learn about you?
Amanda: I have degrees in both art and network engineering.
Jessica: Describe Your Perfect Holiday Experience
Amanda: I don't care, as long as it happens using someone else's time, energy and money.
