Letting Go: A New Year, A New You... or just embracing your you?

Last month, my daughter turned 17.

Seventeen. I say it out loud, and I can hardly believe it.

She’s wildly independent, bold, and ready to take on the world. A force of her own. And as proud as I am of her, there’s a tug on my heart that I can’t ignore. Time feels short—precious and fleeting. It feels like I blinked, and suddenly she was no longer the little girl I carried in my arms.

The week of her birthday, I stumbled upon a poem that brought me to a full stop. The words seemed written just for me:

"If I could keep you little forever, I wouldn’t. As much as you are part of me, you don’t belong to me. You belong to the wind, the moon, the stars. Your heart is going to change the world and make it a better place, and if I’m lucky, I will be here to watch you do it."

That sentiment hit me in a way I wasn’t expecting. Letting go of her—releasing her to grow, to find herself, to make her mark—is both the hardest and most beautiful thing I’ve ever prep to do. As much as I want to hold her close, I know she’s ready. It wont be long, and I know I have to be ready, too.

Why Is Letting Go So Hard?

This thought stayed with me long after I read the poem. And it occurred to me: we hold on to more than just people.

We hold on to memories, outdated stories about who we are, and sometimes even old versions of ourselves—not because they serve us, but because they’re familiar. Safe.
